Japan has around 1,500 measurable earthquakes every year. The question is never whether there are earthquakes — it's whether this specific one affects your specific trip.
When an earthquake alert pops up, the number you'll see in the headline is the magnitude — how much energy was released at the source. That's useful for geologists. For travelers, the number that actually matters is seismic intensity: how hard the ground shook at a particular location.
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake centered near Tokyo can register intensity 5 or 6 in central Tokyo and intensity 1 or 2 in Osaka — same quake, completely different travel implications. Two cities, two completely different situations.
The First Thing to Check: Intensity at Your Destination
Before deciding anything, look up the intensity at your specific destination — not the epicenter.
The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes an earthquake intensity map updated within minutes of each quake: jma.go.jp/bosai/earthquake. Find your destination on the map and read the number there.
Here's what each level means for your trip:

The large majority of "Japan earthquake" news stories cover quakes that register intensity 4 or below at major tourist destinations. If the intensity at your destination is 4 or under, your trip is almost certainly not affected in any meaningful way.
Distance Changes Everything
Japan stretches roughly 3,000 kilometers north to south. An earthquake that devastates one region can be completely imperceptible 500 kilometers away.
Say a magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes just off the coast of Tokyo. Here's what travelers in different cities would actually experience:

This is the single most common reason people cancel trips unnecessarily. The news frames earthquakes nationally; the actual impact is intensely local.
What Happens to the Shinkansen
Japan's bullet train network has an automatic emergency braking system (UrEDAS) that triggers the moment seismic sensors detect intensity 4 or higher anywhere along the track. Trains stop immediately — before the worst shaking arrives, and well before anything has a chance to go wrong.
After stopping, JR conducts a track inspection before resuming service. How long that takes depends on what they find:

Aftershocks: How Long to Stay Cautious
After any significant earthquake, aftershocks are inevitable. The larger the main shock, the longer the aftershock sequence — and the larger the aftershocks can be.

The reassuring part: aftershock risk diminishes sharply with distance. If your destination is 400 km from the epicenter and registered intensity 2 during the main shock, your exposure to aftershocks there is minimal.
Airline Free Cancellation: Don't Assume
You may have heard that airlines offer free cancellation after disasters. They do — but not for every earthquake, and not automatically.
Airline waiver policies typically activate only when:
- The destination airport is directly damaged and cannot operate normally
- The airline declares a "natural disaster exception" based on its own safety assessment
- Your specific flight is actually cancelled by the airline
For a routine intensity 5 quake that doesn't disrupt the airport, your flight will almost certainly still depart on schedule. Standard cancellation fees apply unless you can confirm a specific waiver is in place for your route and travel date.
Before assuming you can cancel for free, go to your airline's website or call their service line and ask directly: "Is there an active waiver for my flight?" Don't assume — verify.
Travel Insurance Is a Separate Issue
Airline cancellation waivers and travel insurance cancel coverage are different things, and they don't always align.
Most standard travel insurance requires an actual, documented reason why you cannot travel — not just a reason you'd prefer not to:
