Wakayama Prefecture 地震風險
Wakayama's southern Kii Peninsula faces the Nankai Trough directly — some coastal areas would receive tsunami within 5 minutes of rupture. The 1854 "Inamura no Hi" (rice sheaves fire) story from this coast has become a symbol of tsunami preparedness worldwide.

The Nankai Trough passes just south of Wakayama Prefecture. The southern Kii Peninsula is one of Japan's closest land areas to the Nankai Trough — tsunami arrival within 5 minutes is expected at some coastal points. The 1854 "Inamura no Hi" story — in which a village headman burned his rice sheaves to guide villagers to high ground — originated in what is now Hirogawa Town, Wakayama.
